The Source Archive is your permanent original collection. Do not treat it as the folder you browse all day.

Keeping original packs intact matters. You preserve the creator's folder structure, retain documentation and license files, and reduce the chance of breaking programs that expect samples to remain in specific relative locations.
If a pack contains MPC programs, keygroups, expansion files, or project files, do not casually rename or separate their supporting audio. Keep the source version untouched and create copies of favorite WAV files for your Working Library instead.
Layer 2: Working Library
The Working Library is the collection you actually browse during production. It should be smaller, flatter, and organized around the decisions you make while producing rather than around the store where you bought the sound.

You do not need every folder on day one. Start with the categories you already search for constantly and add subfolders only when a folder becomes too large to browse efficiently.
Layer 3: Projects
Project-specific audio belongs with the project. This includes chops created for one beat, bounced stems, resampled drum buses, recorded vocals, printed effects, custom bass edits, and temporary arrangement audio.
Do not throw every resampled file back into the global library. A pitched, filtered, reversed chop called Sample_07_Final.wav may make perfect sense inside one beat and become meaningless six months later.
Only move a project-created sound into the Working Library when it becomes genuinely reusable.
Organize by Function, Not Only by Pack Name
When you are making a beat, the question is usually not “Which product did I buy this snare from?” The question is “I need a snare.”
That is why the daily Working Library should be organized mainly by function: kicks, snares, hi hats, drum breaks, melodic samples, bass one shots, textures, and effects.
The original pack identity is still preserved inside the Source Archive. The Working Library is a curated performance layer above it.
Build an Inbox Before You Build More Folders
One of the simplest improvements is a single folder called 00_INBOX. Every new sample pack goes there first.
Do not immediately dump new downloads into your main folders. Extract the product, listen to it, and decide what role it has in your system.

Do Not Over-Tag Everything
Tagging becomes useless when every sound has twelve vague descriptions. Use a small vocabulary that reflects the decisions you actually make.
For drums: dry, dusty, crunchy, soft, hard, roomy, tight.
For samples: dark, soulful, jazz, cinematic, abstract, warm.
For textures: vinyl, tape, mechanical, room, outdoor.
Use key and BPM when they are objectively useful. Use mood tags only when they help you retrieve sounds faster.

Keep Your Drive Path Consistent
Changing the location of a sample library after hundreds of projects reference it can create missing-file problems.
Choose the final storage location early. On Windows, keeping the same drive letter for a dedicated sample drive can help projects find files consistently. On macOS, keep the drive name stable if applications reference paths through that volume.
If you are migrating to a new drive, copy the complete library first, test several old projects, then retire the original location only after confirming everything works.
Do Not Use the Cloud as Your Only Working Copy
Cloud storage is useful for backup and synchronization, but a production sample library should have a complete local or external copy that remains available during a session.
Some cloud systems can replace local files with online-only placeholders to save space. A DAW or sampler cannot load a file that has not actually been downloaded.
How to Handle Duplicates
Duplicates become a problem when they appear in the Working Library, not necessarily when they exist in the Source Archive.
Your Source Archive may legitimately contain the same sound because it appears in two different bundles. Your Working Library should be stricter.
Before deleting anything permanently, confirm the files are truly identical, keep the original product archive intact, check that no MPC programs depend on the location, and back up before a large cleanup.
