What an expansion does

More than a folder of samples.

An MPC Expansion places complete sound programs inside the MPC workflow. Instead of searching for individual files and mapping every sound yourself, you load a prepared kit and begin creating immediately.

Kits arrive ready to play

Sounds are assigned to pads and saved as MPC programs. Load a program from the Expansion Browser and the complete kit opens with its mapping already in place.

Settings travel with the program

Program level choices such as pad assignment, tuning, gain, envelopes, filters, choke groups and effects can load with the kit when they are part of that release.

Everything remains accessible

The original WAV files stay organized inside the content folder. You can browse them individually, build new programs or use them in another DAW whenever you need more control.

Exact contents vary by release

Some products include extra sequences, MIDI patterns, drum breaks, previews or bonus folders. The product page always shows the exact number of kits and every additional inclusion.

Most current Soul Chemist expansions include the formats below. Always check the product description because older or specialist releases may use a different delivery structure.

Desktop install

The .xpn file

Import this file into MPC Beats, MPC 2 or MPC 3. It installs the expansion artwork, programs and content into the MPC Expansion Browser on your computer.

Do not drag the compressed ZIP file into MPC. Extract the download first.

Standalone install

The Standalone folder

Copy the complete expansion folder into an Expansions folder at the root of your SD card, USB drive or compatible internal user drive.

Copy the complete pack folder. Do not separate or rename its internal files.

Universal audio

The WAV content

Use the raw sounds in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools, Maschine or any sampler that can load standard WAV audio.

The MPC artwork and pre mapped program settings only appear inside the MPC ecosystem.

Installation guide

Choose the method that matches your workflow.

You only need one method. Install the XPN on your computer, copy the ready made Standalone folder to a drive, or install on desktop first and export the expansion to your MPC hardware.

MPC Beats, MPC 2 and MPC 3

Install the .xpn on your computer

Use this method when you create with MPC Software, an MPC controller or the MPC plug in inside another DAW.

Download and extract the ZIPOpen the downloaded archive and extract its complete contents to a normal folder.

Open your MPC applicationLaunch MPC Beats, MPC 2 or MPC 3 before importing the expansion.

Drag the .xpn into MPCDrag the extracted .xpn file onto the open MPC window and confirm the import when prompted.

Open the Expansion BrowserSelect the expansion artwork, choose a program and load it into your project.

Important: importing the ZIP itself will not work. The .xpn must be extracted before you drag it into MPC.

Direct standalone copy

Copy the Standalone folder to your drive

Use this method when the download includes a ready made Standalone folder and you want the fastest route to your MPC hardware.

Prepare your storageConnect an SD card, USB drive or compatible internal user drive to your computer.

Create the main folderAt the top level of the drive, create a folder named exactly:Expansions

Copy the complete expansion folderPlace the whole pack folder inside the Expansions folder.Your Drive / Expansions / Pack Name /

Eject and loadSafely eject the drive, connect it to your MPC and open Browser, then Expansions.

Do not copy only the loose files inside the pack folder. The MPC needs the original folder structure to find the programs and their samples.

MPC 2 export

Export from MPC 2 to standalone hardware

Use this method after importing the .xpn on your computer when you prefer MPC Software to build the correct standalone folder automatically.

Connect the destination driveUse an SD card, USB drive or installed SATA drive that your computer can access.

Open the export menuInside MPC 2, go to:File > Export > Expansions

Select the pack and destinationTick the expansion, choose the external drive and start the export.

Wait for completionSafely eject the drive after MPC confirms that the export has finished.

MPC 3 export

Export from MPC 3 to standalone hardware

MPC 3 uses Expansion Manager instead of the export menu found in MPC 2.

Connect the destination driveMake sure it has enough free space for the complete expansion.

Open Expansion ManagerInside MPC 3, go to:File > Tools > Expansion Manager

Choose ExportSelect the expansion and choose your SD card, USB drive or compatible user drive.

Finish safelyWait for the completion message before ejecting the drive and returning to standalone mode.

Legacy MPC note: modern .xpn files and current Expansion Browser artwork do not install directly on classic MPC models. The raw WAV files can still be used when their audio format and storage setup are supported by your specific machine. Legacy program files are only included when a product page explicitly says so.

Recommended workflow

Keep the library fast, safe and easy to update.

A clean storage structure prevents missing samples and makes every expansion easier to find.

Use dedicated user storage

Store third party expansions on an SD card, USB drive or compatible user SSD. Avoid changing or filling the protected factory content drive.

Keep folders intact

Do not rename internal content folders, move individual samples or separate programs from their WAV files after installation.

Install in both modes when needed

Standalone mode reads content from the MPC drive. Controller mode reads content installed on the computer. Install the expansion in both places when you use both workflows.

Troubleshooting

Most installation problems take one minute to fix.

Check these points before downloading the pack again or rebuilding your storage.

The .xpn file will not import

Make sure the download has been fully extracted. Drag the actual .xpn file into an open MPC window, not the ZIP file or the folder that contains it. Update MPC Software if the import window never appears.

The expansion does not appear on my standalone MPC

Confirm that the structure is Drive / Expansions / Pack Folder. The complete pack folder must sit inside the Expansions folder at the root of the drive. Safely eject the drive, reconnect it and reopen the Expansion Browser.

The programs load but samples are missing

The internal folder structure has probably been changed. Copy the expansion again as one complete folder and do not rename, move or delete the content folder or individual WAV files.

My drive does not appear on the computer in controller mode

For MPC One, MPC One+ and MPC Key 37, a drive connected through the MPC USB A port may not mount on the computer in controller mode. Use an SD card or connect the storage device directly to the computer.

I installed it on the MPC but cannot see it in MPC Software

Standalone and controller mode do not automatically share installed content. Import the .xpn on the computer as well, or browse the external Expansions folder manually from MPC Software.

The expansion appears twice on my computer

This normally happens when the same pack has been imported more than once or when a duplicate folder has been copied into an MPC content location. Remove only the duplicate and keep the complete working installation intact.

Do I need a computer?

A computer is required to download and extract the files. After the Standalone folder has been copied to compatible storage, supported MPC hardware can use the expansion without the computer.

Can I install the expansion on the MPC internal drive?

You can use an accessible user drive or installed SATA drive on compatible hardware. External user storage is usually easier to manage. Do not modify a protected factory drive unless your MPC documentation explicitly allows it.

Can I use the sounds in any DAW?

Yes. Load the included WAV files into any DAW or sampler that supports standard WAV audio. To browse the expansion with its MPC artwork and programs inside a DAW, open the MPC plug in.

Will the expansion work on MPC 2500 or MPC 2000XL?

Not as a modern XPN expansion. Those machines do not use the current MPC Expansion Browser. You can import compatible WAV files manually, but you will need to build and save your own legacy programs unless the product specifically includes them.

Does MPC 3 require a different expansion?

No separate Soul Chemist edition is normally required. Import the .xpn into MPC 3 and use Expansion Manager when you want to export it to standalone hardware.

Can I move an installed expansion later?

Moving or renaming installed folders can break links between programs and samples. It is safer to reinstall or export the expansion to the new destination and verify it before deleting the original copy.
